Amogy Inc. Tests Truck Powered by Ammonia
The trucking industry is full of researchers trying to find the next big thing in replacing diesel as the main source of fuel. Between electricity, various forms of natural gas, and hydrogen cells, it can be a lot to consider. Now, a new contender has entered the ring that has certainly caught us by surprise.
Details
Ammonia is commonly used in fertilizers and household cleaners, but can it be used to power your truck? This is what Amogy set out to find, starting in 2020. Roughly three years later, the company did its first test run of driving around Stony Brook University in New York on a full tank. The results were a resounding success.
The implications for the future of trucking are astounding. It has a comparable refueling time to diesel fuel, making it leagues ahead of electrical charging. It is both safer to store and to transport than hydrogen, reducing the risk of injury. Its emissions are at or near-zero effect on the environment, considering the air is already 80% nitrogen. Frankly, this is the biggest scientific breakthrough for trucking since scientists first performed nuclear fusion, but with a much narrower time horizon than the numerous decades it would take for each truck to become its own miniature nuclear reactor.
What Happens Next?
Amogy wants to continue doing additional testing. While their first results of spending an entire fuel tank driving in circles for continuous hours proved to be a success, the start-up wants to do more practical testing, including delivering goods across hundreds of miles.
Seonghoon Woo, CEO of Amogy, believes ammonia is the answer that has been in front of us the entire time. “This achievement not only showcases Amogy’s technology as an accessible and scalable solution for trucking, it also highlights the capabilities and dedication of our outstanding team. First it was an ammonia-powered drone, then a tractor and now a truck. In the near future, we look forward to further scaling and tackling other hard-to-abate sectors, such as global shipping.” Once Amogy has proven ammonia-powered to trucking to be viable, the company may go even bigger and start applying the technology to shipping barges. We will have to wait and see.
