FMCSA English Enforcement Brings More Inspections
As we are sure you know by now, the Trump Administration is working tirelessly to bring English proficiency back to America’s roads so as to minimize the chances of accidents. But this change also has a reverberating effect on other aspects of road safety as well, namely, more inspections are happening.
Details
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the number of roadside inspections between June 25th 2025 and August 31st was tallied at almost 8,000, a 67% increase compared to the same time in 2024 at 4,772.
The increase in roadside vehicular inspections is not only an English-enforcement phenomenon, however. In May 2025, before the Executive Order that kicked everything into high gear, roadside inspections increased 16% year-over-year, showing a correlation between the new presidential administration and vehicular safety.
“America First means safety first. Americans are a lot safer on roads alongside truckers who can understand and interpret our traffic signs. This common-sense change ensures the penalty for failure to comply is more than a slap on the wrist” Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on May 20th in regards to the reinstatement of English requirement regulations that were originally suspended in 2016, during the Obama years. In July, Duffy said, “Since I took action to enforce language proficiency requirements for truckers, our state partners have put roughly 1,500 unqualified drivers out of service.”
Conclusion
Ultimately, if we may be so bold, we see the increase of roadside inspections to be a big plus. While it is true that they can put a damper on the driving job, it is far better than the alternative of a vehicle breaking down on the center lane of a highway, creating catastrophe.
In regards to the English language requirements themselves, Secretary Duffy has found himself at odds with some states not cooperating. If the states of California, New Mexico, and Texas do not play ball, Duffy plans to withhold about $50.5 million in federal funds. California and Texas in particular have had the highest numbers of English inspection failures rates, in part due to their proximity to the southern border but also because of their higher population.
