Supreme Court to Hear Trump Tariff Case
By this point, if you have followed the news at any point in 2025, you are exhausted about hearing the word “tariff.” Hopefully the case will be settled once and for all, as the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case for Trump’s imported goods taxes that have been battled in the lower courts for almost half a year.
How It Applies to Trucking
The biggest impact tariffs have on the trucking industry has to be steel, a vital component used in the building of various trucking and trailer parts. Before Trump’s “Liberation Day”, where he announced widespread tariffs to be placed on countries around the world, steel was taxed at a rate of 25%. Trump is hoping to double it to 50%. Likely, this will create an increase in the price of new trucks, and business entities will hold on to their older equipment for longer before making an upgrade.
The other major impact Trump’s tariffs could have on the trucking industry is on port operations. With import prices going up, United States goods will become comparatively more lucrative, and there will be less activity at the nation’s ports with dryage containers. Considering the Great Port Backlog of 2021, this may not be the worst thing in the world.
Current Case Details
Two lower courts said that the tariffs implemented by President Trump were done illegally, saying that they would require congressional approval. An appeals court stepped in and provided an injunction: while the battle rages on in court, the tariffs are set to be on rather than off. This means we are already experiencing the tariffs as of September 2025. The only question that remains is if they will stay in place until Trump (or a future president) rescinds them, or the courts rule against them and they become null and void.
Conclusion
When the Supreme Court agrees to hear a case, it often means that there are still numerous months of legal proceedings before we reach an official verdict. This means that tariffs are on the menu for now. Numerous businesses have planned ahead of time and stocked up on materials to try and mitigate the impact, so it is likely we will not see the full effect on the tariffs until the Supreme Court rules in favor of Trump, and not at all if they rule against him.
