Used Class 8 Order Sales Skyrocket in December 2025
We wrote a little under a month ago about how orders for new Class 8 trucks were on the upswing at the end of 2025, but now we have data showing the exact same phenomenon is applying for trucks that are older and have had previous owners.
Details
ACT Research estimates that year-over-year units sold (December 2024 to December 2025) increased by 8.8%, while month-over-month (November 2025 to December 2025) increased by 15.7%. In total, the entity estimates 23,600 units traded hands.
So what caused the increase in volume? Unlike new orders for trucks, the race to purchase trucks with grandfathered regulations hardly applies. It is possible (and likely) that fleets wanted to upgrade to newer vehicles, but were priced out and sold out on brand new trucks, leaving them to purchase gently used vehicles instead, perhaps from those who were looking to upgrade to the new trucks.
“Final used vehicle prices across classes and channels were relatively in line with preliminary expectations and supportive of the dynamic that older trucks (especially sleepers for longhaul) are seeing price pressure from a declining driver pool, with Class 6-7 likely more insulated from driver attrition,” said Harrison Bauer, industry analyst at Susquehanna International Group.
Conclusion
So what does this mean for you, the fleet and driver, at the end of the day? It means that trucks are traveling through a pipeline of sorts: new trucks are purchased by fleets that want to avoid maintenance issues, which are then sold at a steep discount to those who do not mind some small maintenance issues, followed by potentially trading hands a few more times before the truck reaches retirement. This cycle is significantly healthier for the industry than the alternative that was highlighted during the coronavirus pandemic: with production grinding to a halt in 2020, a used truck’s sale price increased dramatically, and fleets could not afford to part with ancient technology.
