Trump Administration Announces Rollback of Endangerment Finding
When it comes to upgrading to a newer truck, the end user can often find them to be more fuel efficient, but, as is with the case of electric vehicles, is it really worth it if the final purchase price is higher as a direct result? That is what the second Trump Administration is asking as it announced the rollback of the Endangerment Finding regulation.
Details
The Endangerment Finding allowed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate six different greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, two of which were carbon dioxide and methane. Now, the EPA is relinquishing that power.
“The Endangerment Finding has been the source of 16 years of consumer choice restrictions and trillions of dollars in hidden costs for Americans,” added U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin. “Referred to by some as the ‘Holy Grail’ of the ‘climate change religion,’ the Endangerment Finding is now eliminated. The Trump EPA is strictly following the letter of the law, returning common sense to policy, delivering consumer choice to Americans, and advancing the American Dream. As EPA Administrator, I am proud to deliver the single largest deregulatory action in U.S. history on behalf of American taxpayers and consumers. As an added bonus, the off-cycle credit for the almost universally despised start-stop feature on vehicles has been removed.”
The off-cycle credit allows vehicle manufacturers to claim emission reductions in real-world settings that could not be tested in a laboratory, such as the start-stop feature in vehicles.
President Trump himself commented on the reversal of the Endangerment Finding, saying that the juice is not worth the squeeze. “They have computers all over the place trying to save half an ounce of fuel” he said, when asked about it.
Conclusion
The most likely outcome of this is that newer trucks in the future are going to have their prices reduced as manufacturers cut back on implementing sophisticated technologies being used to save an extra quarter-mile for every gallon of fuel. While this will result in worse fuel efficiency, the decrease in purchase price should result in a net financial gain for the trucking company purchasing them.
