Pennsylvania to Perform Aggressive Driving Enforcement Blitz
When it comes to road safety, perhaps three of the biggest risks a driver can take to impact their driving ability are driving while intoxicated, exhausted, or angry. The third one is often overlooked, and because of that Pennsylvania announced that for the next few weeks it was going to be on the lookout for aggressive behaviors on the road and make them even angrier by dishing out citations.
“Every driver can make the choice to keep our roads safer,” said PennDOT Safety Press Officer Emily Swecker. “This campaign is a reminder to drive safely and obey the laws.”

Unless you have been living under a rock, chances are you have heard about the effects that driving while under the influence of drugs or sleep deprivation can have on your driving. While anger is not quite as studied to the extent as the other two, data shows that it has a monumental impact on driving behaviors such as taking unnecessary risks. While data on driving while angry is limited, there is a casual link between being aggressive and speeding, which is considered the leading contributing factor of accidents in commercial vehicles according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Road rage is specifically listed as the reasoning behind 0.2% of the crashes, showing that there is an explicit connection to crashes and anger, though this is usually linked to other behaviors.
Conclusion
Driving while calm is an important aspect of being safe, but so is working around those who are not quite as wise. PennDOT suggests the following steps if you see someone driving erratically:
- Get out of their way and don’t challenge them.
- Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact and ignore rude gestures.
- Don’t block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic.
- Do not attempt to follow or pursue the vehicle. You or a passenger may call the police. If you use a cell phone, pull over to a safe location.
Clearly more studies need to be done on the direct impact driving while angry has on crash statistics, but until that happens, the school of thought known as common sense will have to do.
