Michigan to Build Electric Truck Stop
One of the greatest problems facing the trucking industry in the transition from diesel to electric battery power is the lack of charging infrastructure. After all, it took approximately 100 years for fossil fuel stations to reach the prevalence they have right now, so replacing all of that with electricity is bound to be difficult. Michigan, however, is teaming up with Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) to create a “Mobility Charging Hub”, a truck stop used exclusively for electric vehicles.
Details
The plans for the Mobility Charging Hub is to place it along the I-96 in Redford, MI, a location that has 10,000 different commercial vehicles pass by it every day.
Michigan is using $13 million in federal funding to help make the Mobility Charging Hub a reality, which will also be accessible to 4-wheel electric drivers. While details are sparse about the amenities that will be offered to drivers while their vehicles charge, the longer wait times when compared to diesel fuel almost assure that the Mobility Charging Hub will have restaurants and some forms of entertainment.
“Freight trucks drive commerce, deliver goods, and connect businesses throughout the nation, which is why it is critical to prepare this industry for the future,” said Garlin Gilchrist II, the Michigan Lt. Governor. “Our Mobility Charging Hub will help more companies electrify their fleets, cement Michigan’s leadership in the future of freight, and rebuild our transportation infrastructure to support the economy of tomorrow. Over the past five years, our administration has made progress investing in infrastructure and positioning Michigan as the best place to innovate the future, and we are taking that one step further with this ‘truck stop of the future.’ We will work with anyone to ensure more innovators and companies can make it in Michigan.”
Conclusion
Correct us if we are wrong, but we think this may be the grounds for the first ever truck stop to cater exclusively to electric vehicles. As it is now, electric trucks are lucky to find even one charging station at truck stops, so this increase in charging infrastructure will be valuable to those driving electric when it finishes.
As of the time of writing, there is no projected deadline for when the Mobility Charging Hub will be finished.
