July Port Activity Skyrockets from Last Year
If you need evidence that the economy is back from the slump of the COVID-19 pandemic and the supply chain woes that stemmed from it, look no further than imports into the United States. Data has come out for July 2024, and it is showing strong growth from the same month last year.
Details
The news comes from various ports across the United States, mostly on the West Coast with shipments from Asia:
- Northwest Seaport Alliance, in charge of ports both in Seattle and Tacoma, state a 12.7% jump in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), from 234,875 to 264,726.
- Oakland’s port reported 136,181 to 184,467. This is an 18.8 increase in TEUs.
- The Port of Los Angeles reports a healthy 37.6% increase, from 684,290 TEUs to 684,290.
- Its sister port in Long Beach reported a staggering gain of 52.6%: 578,249 TEUs to 882,376.
- On the East Coast, the South Carolina Ports Authority reports an increase of 7.8%.
- Further north, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reports going from 725,479 TEUs processed to 806,015 TEUs.
- The news is not 100% sunshine and rainbows, however, as Port Houston marked a 5% decrease, which it attributes to construction at the port putting the brakes on operations.
Conclusion
When business is doing well at the ports, business is doing better in the trucking industry, simply due to the nature of ships not being so very good on land. While there are railways that can carry containers for thousands of miles to the center of the nation, it all requires a truck in order to get to specific places. As such, this news for increased imports and exports is solid news for the trucking industry.
The most interesting part of this development is that Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said that a solid chunk of its shipments are “year-end holiday goods.” It seems Christmas comes a little bit earlier every year, and in about twenty years, we will likely be seeing holiday shipments in January!
