EPA Removes DEF Sensor Requirement
Two months ago, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) started collecting data about Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system failures and the resulting derating that happens on trucks. Now, it has made its decision: a different method of testing for emissions will apply, but the DEF systems as it stands will disappear.
Details
When a DEF system failure occurs, a truck will go into a state of “derating”, lowering how much speed and power output it has until the problem is resolved. While first it would result in 15% less torque, it would eventually go on to put a speed limit of 25 miles per hour onto the truck.
Now, Lee Zeldin, head of the EPA, is changing the requirements to say that a NOx sensor can be used to derive the output of DEF emissions.
The problem with this change, however, is that fixing trucks that already have the DEF and derating software is not as simple as removing the system, which would trigger an alert to the truck’s built-in computer. Instead, a software and firmware update will need to be implemented in order to have the system removed in a way that will allow the truck to continue operation.
Conclusion
The implications of this change are clear for trucks that have not yet been built: it will decrease the weight of the truck, improving fuel efficiency marginally, and will have one less system tacked on that results in a higher price tag for trucks.
The real problem is reworking existing engine systems to remove the derating system and instead using the NOx sensors to calculate the rate of DEF-related emissions. The most likely outcome is that drivers who already have the system in place will simply continue driving until a derating event occurs, at which time the trucking company will pay a mechanic to take it out and update the software, or perhaps even keep it if it is cheaper. There are a few million trucks on the road with the software as it currently stands, so artifacts of this system will likely last for a handful of decades.
