FMCSA Revokes Three More ELDs
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) removed three more Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) on September 4th due to the providers’ inability to remain in compliance with the FMCSA’s terms. We will cover which ones they are and what the next steps are if your truck is carrying one of them.
Details
The three ELDs in question are:
TT ELD PT30
Model Number: ARN752 ELD Identifier: CZGS10 ELD Provider: TT ELD Inc
ELOG42
Model Number: ERS ELD Identifier: ERS156 ELD Provider: Leko INC
RENAISSANCE ELD
Model Number: RNSSNC ELD Identifier: RNS592 ELD Provider: RENAISSANCE ELD
If you have one or more of these three ELDs amongst your fleet, you are advised to swap to paper logs for the time being, and to replace the ELDs with compliant ones by November 3rd. The FMCSA has a Registered Devices List that it maintains that you can pull from.
Conclusion
While it is possible that an ELD provider may be able to get their systems back up to code and get back on the list, the FMCSA says that is a rare occurrence and that no trucker should ever use that as their plan to come back into compliance. Once November 3 rolls around, all bets are off for drivers with these three ELD types.
The decision for the FMCSA to notify truckers of this removal is a step in the right direction, however. Before, the FMCSA had a very “lazzie-faire” method of enforcement, requiring truckers to keep track of which ELDs were approved and no longer approved on their own time. This shift is a welcome relief for truckers who do not follow the Registered Devices List with great vigor, as if they do not have hundreds of other things to worry about in their day-to-day jobs.
It is highly advised that you change the ELDs as soon as possible. Though the FMCSA has encouraged safety officials not to cite drivers using these defunct ELDs, that is more of a suggestion than an order, and a misinformed officer unaware of the transition period may still write a ticket.
