May 2026 International Roadcheck Focuses on the ELD
When the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) does its International Roadcheck event every year, an enforcement blitz for seventy-two hours on the three largest countries on the North American continent, it always has a specific section that changes each year obtaining specific scrutiny. This year, it will be the Electronic Logging Device (ELD).
Details
Electronic Logging Devices are there with the intent to reduce fraud when tracking hours served, but there are still ways to manipulate the data to give the wrong impression. To that end, the CVSA is focusing special attention upon drivers who attempt to alter this data.
The CVSA cites the reason for this focus because of just how many violations appeared in the 2025 International Roadcheck. “Last year, falsification of record of duty status was the second most-cited driver violation, at 58,382 violations. And five out of the top 10 driver violations were related to hours of service or ELDs,” CVSA stated in its announcement of International Roadcheck 2025.
But ELDs are only half of the “focus” equation, as the CVSA not only does a driver-specific focus section, but also one for vehicles. For the commercial truck itself, the topic of interest is cargo securement. “Improper or inadequate cargo securement poses a serious risk to the driver and other motorists by adversely affecting the vehicle’s maneuverability and/or causing unsecured loads to fall or become dislodged, resulting in roadway hazards and/or crashes. In 2025, 18,108 violations were issued because cargo was not secured to prevent leaking/spilling/blowing/falling and 16,054 violations were issued for vehicle components or dunnage not being secured.”
Conclusion
With the International Roadcheck running from May 12th to the 14th, it is a good idea to get your truck and your mind into tip-top shape for the upcoming event. Some drivers and trucking companies make the decision not to drive during that time, but that never remedies the actual issue.
Though ELD tampering and cargo securement are the primary aspects of this years’ inspections, vehicles and drivers will still go through a 37-step process, meaning it may be a good idea to invest in tires, brakes, and other things that your truck may have that are faulty.
As with prior years, the CVSA will publish the results for the International Roadcheck sometime around August.
