Indiana May Plan Toll Road on I-70
Dedicated readers may remember the Rhode Island toll case saga, the current step of which is whether or not it will go to the Supreme Court. With the current ruling being in favor of Rhode Island keeping the tolls in place, other states appear to be taking up the mantle, as the state of Indiana public records show a request from Governor Mike Braun applying for federal approval of making I-70 in Indiana a toll road.
Details
The plan states that the objective for raising money via tolls is to reconstruct sections of I-70 as the need arises, but does that justify the need to put a 54-cent per mile charge on heavy-duty trucks traveling across it? With 156.6 miles of I-70 crossing the state of Indiana, it will cost a driver $84.56 cents to cross the state. Standard passenger vehicles would be charged 10 cents per mile, or $15.66 to cross Indiana on I-70.
This, of course, would have reverberating implications. When people need to cross Indiana, why would they pay 54 cents per mile to do so on I-70 when they can take an alternative route such as Interstate 74 and Route 40.
Then there is the question of it potentially going to court, where it could spend years in litigation with various possible results, with even the results from the previously mentioned Rhode Island case setting a precedent.
Conclusion
When it comes to toll roads, there are dozens of interlocking factors that come into play to decide as to whether or not it is a good idea, so we will remain neutral on the idea and will have to see what happens.
The best case scenario is that the toll revenue goes 100% to road repair, the Indiana section of I-70 becomes spotless, and the price barrier reduces the total number of vehicles on the road, making it smooth sailing for those willing to pay. But concept and execution are two entirely different things, so we will reserve our judgements on the move until the full picture is revealed.
