FMCSA to Start Crash Study
A study commissioned in 2021 by Congress is set to begin soon, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The results may very well impact trucking regulations for years to come.
Details
As published in the Federal Register, the FMCSA is set to study fatal crashes that happen during 2026 and 2027 across 30 state jurisdictions, where it will determine the cause of at least 2,000 fatal crashes happening in that time to see where regulations may help to stymie crashes going forward.
The project is expected to take approximately 61,862 man-hours of work, doing data sampling and analysis to determine how much various factors impacted the likelihood of a crash. The way they calculated this, including training time for staffers, is quite fascinating and can be seen as published in the federal register. With the project total coming to an estimated $30 million, it is likely that they will be using an extensive amount of supplies in their research, lest the data analysts are being paid over $400 an hour.
Conclusion
As noted in the Federal Register, this period of data collection “will collect data aimed at identifying key driver, vehicle, motor carrier, and environmental factors that may contribute to fatal crashes involving heavy-duty trucks.” This means that if you are driving out there on the road in 2026 or 2027, you should be on your best behavior. As bad as causing a fatal trucking accident is, it pales in comparison to becoming exhibit A for a government research project that changes regulations in the trucking industry for years to come. Imagine the horror and shame of becoming the reason why truck drivers have to drive at a maximum speed limit of 50 MPH nationwide, named after you in particular!
Of course, speed will be just one variable tested in determining the likelihood of an accident, and will include other things such as distractions, sleeplessness, the environment such as wet and slippery roads, and the behavior of other drivers. If truckers are on their best behavior during data collection, the regulations may just impact 4-wheel drivers and demanding they respect their larger brethren!
