FMCSA Removes 3,000 CDL Training Providers from Registry
A little under a month ago, we reported how the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) was cracking down on “CDL mills”, training providers who seem to focus on quantity over quality of truckers, in an effort to make the nation’s roads safer. That is exactly what happened in the last month, as the FMCSA has reduced the number of listed training providers on its registry.

Looking to get a Commercial Driver’s License or looking for where someone you know can get one? The FMCSA has a database of approved schools in the Training Provider Registry.
At the start of the month there were 39,554 total listed training locations, but that number has now decreased to 36,660, a drop of over seven percent. Additionally, the FMCSA reports that 4,500 training providers have been placed on notice at risk of losing their provider status should they not tighten their standards.
“This administration is cracking down on every link in the illegal trucking chain,” Duffy said. “Under Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, bad actors were able to game the system and let unqualified drivers flood our roadways. Their negligence endangered every family on America’s roadways, and it ends today. Under President Trump, we are reigning in illegal and reckless practices that let poorly trained drivers get behind the wheel of semi-trucks and school buses.”
“If you are unwilling to follow the rules, you have no place training America’s commercial drivers,” said FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs. “We will not tolerate negligence.”
Conclusion
This decision naturally brings up the debate of governmental interference in commerce and business. We will leave it to you to decide if it is a worthy tradeoff to increase the standards of safety on the road for drivers behind 80,000 pound vehicles. There have been many a talk about a “driver shortage”, and if that is true, then putting a damper on the number of training providers will further exacerbate it. However, there has been recent evidence to suggest that a driver shortage is not as pertinent an issue as originally thought, so it is possible that higher standards are better for us all. A lower number of drivers on the road will put upward pressure on wages, so the best drivers get paid more!
