EPA to Roll Back Diesel Exhaust Fluid Regulations
Diesel Exhaust Fluid, henceforth referred to as DEF, is a fluid that combines with standard diesel exhaust to reduce the total amount of NOx added to the atmosphere as the diesel engine runs. This sounds fantastic on paper, but regulations from 2010 have required truck manufacturers to reduce engine power should the DEF tank be running low. Lee Zeldin’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants to change that.
Details
Running low on DEF? Your machine may start running more slowly to compensate, or at least it did until the EPA under the second Trump Administration stated it is working to reverse the trend.
“We have heard loud and clear from small businesses across the United States that the current DEF system is unacceptable. It is unacceptable that farmers, truckers, construction workers and many other small businesses continually experience failures of diesel-powered equipment when they need it most — costing millions of dollars in lost productivity,” said EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin in a news release. “Today, we are responding to those concerns by calling on manufacturers to take action to update their software and eliminate the unnecessary sudden loss of power and frustrating shutdowns that too many Americans have experienced.”
Trucks from 2027 and beyond will no longer be required to have DEF regulation software, while the EPA is also working with equipment manufacturers to introduce software updates that turn it off in existing vehicles. With it being a standard since around 2010, that means there are over 15 years of trucks that are affected by this change.
Conclusion
So what does this mean for you? If your truck is on the older side of the post-2010 technology revolution, you likely will need to bring it into a dealership or proper repair shop to get the latest update for your truck’s software once it comes out. If your truck is newer and has all sorts of online capabilities, there is a good chance that the change will come to your truck automatically with a new system update in the coming months.
While the future changes will prevent your truck from slowing down due to a lack of DEF, we still highly recommend that you top it off every now and then to minimize pollution.
