USA to Halt Work Visas for Truckers
In the latest round of regulations, the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that effective immediately, foreign work visas for commercial truckers is to be put on hold for the foreseeable future.
Details
The announcement comes hot off the heels of President Trump’s executive order that brings back the English proficiency requirement, both reading and speaking, to the nation’s roads on a commercial basis, of which was suspended during the Obama years. After a litany of crashes having been caused by non-English speakers, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy says the nation needs to take a more proactive approach in increasing the nation’s road safety.
“If states had followed the rules, this driver would never have been behind the wheel and three precious lives would still be with us. This crash was a preventable tragedy directly caused by reckless decisions and compounded by despicable failures,” said Duffy, referring to an accident that happened in Florida involving a driver who fell outside of the purview of the English-proficiency executive order. “Non-enforcement and radical immigration policies have turned the trucking industry into a lawless frontier, resulting in unqualified foreign drivers improperly acquiring licenses to operate 40-ton vehicles.”
The move is a drastic one, to say the least. With the moratorium being placed on all potentially incoming commercial drivers, including ones that can speak and read English, the administration is doing a bit of a scorched Earth approach in its attempts to mitigate collisions.
Conclusion
The move has been lauded by industry stakeholders, including American Trucking Associations’ Chris Spear.
“At a minimum, we need better accounting of how many non-domiciled CDLs are being issued,” Spear said in a statement regarding the move, “which is why we applaud Transportation Secretary Duffy for launching a nationwide audit in June upon our request. We also believe a surge in enforcement of key regulations – including motor carrier compliance – is necessary to prevent bad actors from operating on our nation’s highways, and we’ll continue to partner with federal and state authorities to identify where those gaps in enforcement exist.”
There is currently no set timeline for when the stay on work visas in the commercial trucking industry is set to lift.
